Why We Give: Red Racks, DAV, and Missouri Veterans

    ·5 min read

You pull into the parking lot with a trunk full of stuff — old coats your kids outgrew, a set of dishes you replaced last spring, maybe a bag of jeans that don't quite fit anymore. You hand them off, someone says thank you, and you drive away a little lighter.

It takes five minutes. But here's what most people don't realize: that five-minute drop-off sets something much bigger in motion. Those items get sorted, priced, and placed on the floor of one of our Red Racks Thrift Stores across Missouri. When a customer picks them up, the revenue doesn't go to shareholders or a corporate office. It goes directly to the Disabled American Veterans — and from there, it reaches the veterans in our state who need it most.

That's the chain. Your closet cleanout becomes a veteran's second chance.

    What DAV Actually Does

The Disabled American Veterans isn't a slogan or a logo on a collection bin. It's a network of real people doing unglamorous, life-changing work for the men and women who served this country and came home with injuries — visible and invisible.

DAV helps disabled veterans navigate the VA benefits system, which is notoriously difficult to manage alone. They provide free rides to medical appointments for veterans who can't drive themselves. They advocate at the state and federal level for healthcare funding, employment programs, and housing assistance.

In Missouri alone, DAV supports thousands of veterans every year with employment coaching, claims assistance, and transition services for those moving from military to civilian life. When a veteran is struggling to find stable housing or can't get the medical care they earned, DAV steps in — not with a pamphlet, but with a person who knows the system and fights alongside them.

This is what your donations to a DAV thrift store actually fund.

How Red Racks Funds the Mission

Red Racks has been the fundraising engine for DAV in Missouri since 1958. We're not a thrift store that occasionally donates to veterans. We exist because of veterans. Every location, every employee, every price tag is part of a system designed to turn secondhand goods into direct support for disabled American veterans.

Here's how it works. When you donate clothing, furniture, housewares, or accessories to any Red Racks location, our team processes and prices those items for our sales floors. Customers shop — and they get great deals on quality goods. The revenue from those sales flows to DAV, funding the programs described above: employment services, healthcare advocacy, transportation, housing support.

There's no middleman skimming off the top. There's no venture capital firm waiting for a return. Red Racks is a nonprofit operation, and DAV is the sole beneficiary. When you hear us say "every dollar stays in Missouri," we mean it. Your disabled American veterans donations don't leave the state — they go right back into the communities where our stores operate.

We currently run locations across Missouri — from Kansas City to Springfield to Joplin and beyond. Each store employs local staff and serves local shoppers, creating a cycle of community support that's been running for over six decades.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

There are a lot of thrift stores out there. Some are run by other nonprofits doing good work. Some are for-profit companies that look like charities but aren't. It's worth knowing the difference.

When you donate to a for-profit thrift operation, your items generate revenue for a business. That's not inherently wrong — but it's not charitable, either. Your donation isn't tax-deductible in the same way, and the proceeds don't fund veteran services or any other cause. They fund a business model.

When you choose a thrift store that helps veterans — specifically, when you choose Red Racks — you're making a decision that has real downstream impact. You're choosing to support a veteran who needs a ride to a doctor's appointment. You're helping fund a claims advocate who can turn a denied VA application into an approved one. You're keeping money in Missouri, supporting local jobs, and making sure the people who served this country aren't forgotten when they come home.

That's not marketing. That's the math.

If you want to donate to support veterans in Missouri but don't have items to give, you can also shop at any of our locations. Every purchase supports DAV. And if you're part of a school, church, or employer looking to organize a donation drive, we'd love to help you set one up.
